Background: Uganda T.U.C. held its second annual congress in Kampala this weekend. 13 unions are affiliated to the TUC. The Conference was opened by Mr. Sven Fockstedt, Principal ICFTU African Labour College who paid a tribute to the sound foundations being laid by Uganda T.U.C. He announced that Kampala had been selected as the setting for the African Labour College and that would shortly begin on its construction.
A government spokesman (Mr J W. Walker, Deputy Labour Commissioner) said that Government welcomed the development of a strong and democratic TUC in Uganda.
Mr Francis Pulli (pronounced Pulley), President of the Uganda TUC said in his opening address that he had unofficially approached the leaders of the Uganda National Movement but the hearing was not satisfactory. Thereafter a letter was sent to the Chairman of the U.N.M but no reply was received. In his opinion the leaders of the movement did not think clearly and did not realis??? at many of their brothers would be thrown out of work. The President then said he would seek the sanction of Congress to approach the public through the radio.
It was announced that in Kampala alone it was estimated that 3000 Africans had lost their employment..partly through the falling off in trade and partly by intimidation.
Opening shots taken in rather gloomy light conditions. Latter half of roll taken outside as cover shots.
Nothing very visual about boycott but am thinking of covering laid up buses, quiet bazaars and idle brewery on Lake Victoria shore. Heard that leaders of UNM had been arrested at down this morning on a deportation order and that an investigation will be held on Saturday next. Will watch as always and see what I can get.
