Background: In the Eastern Mediterranean off Israel's 110-mile coast-line Visnews filmed Feb 10 Israeli naval and air force units at exercise.

This is the firs time press facilities have been given for full-scale Israeli naval manoeuvres.

According to Jane's Fighting Ships Israel's navy consists of two destroyers (British), four frigates (one vessel captured from the Egyptians on 31 Oct 1956), one patrol vessel, twelve motor torpedo-boats (3 of them British), one depot ship, two submarines (bought from Britain last October) and various small craft.

Israel's growing sea power has not passed unnoticed by her neighbours. Egypt chiefly seems to be worried by the development, and the sale by Britain of the two submarines - formerly "Sanguine" and "Springer" - to Israel was regarded by official circles in Cairo as "a very serious action against Arab nationalism and a move which cannot pass unchallenged under any circumstances".
