Background: The first elimination matches in zone five of the military football championships were played in Yaounde on Thursday (23 December).
SYNOPSIS: A ceremony in Yaounde, the capital of Cameroun, marked the official opening of the matches to be played there. The Advisor on Sports in Africa and the Minister for Armed Forces were there for the opening. Teams from four countries -- Ghana, Mali, Senegal and Cameroun -- were to take part.
The four countries make up zone five, along with Zaire which was not competing in the Cameroun. The football matches form only one section of the military world championship.
In a message to the competitors, the Cameroun Minister of State for the Armed forces, Mr. Sadou Daoundou, said they should be guided by a spirit of discipline, technique and fair play.
After the matches that were played, Ghana and Cameroun were on top with two points each. Cameroun beat Senegal two-nil and Ghana beat Mali three-one. The elimination games will end on Thursday 30 December.
