Background: Communist Vietnamese o forces have out Highway One in South Vietnam the closest to Saigon, they've ever managed. The action took place at Phuoc An village, only 20 miles (32 kilometres) from the capital when the communists captured it from local militiamen. It was not clear whether they were North Vietnamese army forces or local Viet Cong.

COMMUNIST TROOPS OCCUPIED PHUOC AN.DURING THE NIGHT AND THERE WERE NO GOVERNMENT FORCES THERE TO DRIVE THEM OUT SO THE LOCAL MILITIA TRIED TO DO THE JOB. THEY WEE NOT SUCCESSFUL. THEY DID NOT HAVE AIR OR HEAVY ARTILLERY SUPPORT, ONLHEEE OLEEE ONLY ONE SMALL MOAEEE MORTAR. BY EVENING IT WAS NOT KNOWN IF THE VILLAGE WAS OCCUPIED BY NVA OR VC BUT ALTHOUGH THE MILITIA DID NOT TAKE THE VILLAGE THEY WERE NOT DRIVEN AWAY EITHETEEE EITHER.
