Background: Boxing ... an Gary Summerhays, the little known Canadian title-holder, is the new Commonwealth light-heavyweight champion. In Melbourne on Monday (27 February) he met Australia's Tony Mundine, the reigning champion, and knocked him out in the 11th of their scheduled 15-round title fight. It was a shock win for the Canadian. Mundine was comfortably ahead on points at the time of the knockout, and it had looked as through he would stop Summerhays.

SYNOPSIS: The lighter skinned Summerhays, in the white boots, was not expected to pose too many problems for the champion, and in the early stages it had been all Mundine. Summerhays, a strong, rugged campaigner, with nearly 1250 fights under his belt, had tried to take Mundine out of his stride, boring forward behind a barrage of swinging lefts and rights. But the champion's crisper punches dictated. at one stage in his career Mundine had looked a potential world champion, and much of the old class showed through in the early rounds.

As the fight progresses it was still Mundine dictating. Summerhays used up a lot of energy trying to g et to close quarters, but his punches were rarely on target, and Mundine was able to step back, pick him off, and cut him up.

Mundine seemed to be coasting it, but then suddenly a fierce right landed flush on target and it was all over. The champion never looked like beating referee Ken Brady's count. The title was Summerhays'.
