Background: Police fired into the air to dive back left-wing demonstrators stoning Dr. Francisco Sa Carneiro, the Secretary-General of the Centre Popular Democratic Party (PPD) at Beja in southern Portugal on Saturday (10 April).
Several people were slightly injured when Dr. Sa Carneiro ran through a hail of stones to reach a bull rig in Beja to address a PPD election rally. Beja is a stronghold of the Communist Party, and only about 150 people were int he bull ring to hear Dr. Sa Carneira speak.
The building was surrounded by Republican guards on horseback and police with dogs and teargas. The police charged with the dogs to push back a crowd of several hundred demonstrators who gathered outside the bull ring.
Dr. Sa Carneiro refused to enter by a side as urged by his aides, but none of the stones hit him as he went in by the main entrance. Dr. Sa Carneiro, whose party is expected to be neck and neck with the Socialists in the contest for the first place in the elections due to be held on 25 April, accused the left of trying to wreck his rally.
He said this was after they had exacted promises from military leaders that left-wing meetings would be protected form violence. He also accused the left of attacking the "democratic" military leaders through the international press -- a reference to an article in the West German Stern magazine. Stern quoted a radical left-wing German journalist who worked for several months on a left-wing farm co-operative in Portugal as saying the heads of the Army, Air Force and the northern military region, were linked with ex-President Antonio De Spinola.
Dr. Sa Carneiro also addressed another PPD rally in Setubal, south of Lisbon. This also attracted a small crowd, estimated at 150. Security forces were also much in evidence outside the bull ring in Setubal where the rally was held.
