Background: President Banda's one-week State visit to Taiwan is over. but during the time he was there, the Malawi leader saw many facets of the cultural and industrial life under Generalissimo Chiang Kai Shek, and told his host shortly before leaving: "I have had the best time of my life."
President Banda had a crowded programme. For two days of his visit he was out of the Taiwanese capital on a tour of the central ans southern areas, where he visited industrial projects and military bases.
On the less formal side he visited a farmer in his home while touring a number of rural communities, and expressed surprise to see the people living in brick houses and using tractors to plough the land instead of animals. President Banda made a particular study of the agricultural situation - the Nationalist Chinese have been training more than 400 agricultural workers from 18 African countries during the past four years.
He visited, also, a number of factories, exhibitions, and key industries, and had discussions with the governor of the Bank of Taiwan on the island's administrative and economic development. The President had a number of meetings with Generalissimo Chiang Kai Shek during his stay, and the two men attended banquets for one another.
At the end of the visit, President Banda and the Generalissimo issued a communique critical of the People's Republic of China. The communique also expressed the intention to extend the mutual relations of the two countries, and to continue the aid Taiwan is giving to Malawi.
