Background: Seventy-seven Vietnamese refugees, who were refused by the cargo ship Sibonga, arrived in England from Hong Kong on Tuesday (12 June). The remainder of the 1,000 'boat people' accepted by Britain were due to be flown in over the next few days.

SYNOPSIS: The Vietnamese had been booked on a scheduled airline by the British government. They landed at Heathrow airport, London to he driven to their first home in England -- a discussed air force base near the south coast.

Official in Hong Kong, who searched the boat people when they were allowed ashore from the Sibonga two weeks ago, reported that while some had managed to bring valuables out of Vietnam, others were penniless. Their numbers included a Buddhist monk and two doctors.

Some refugees said their ultimate goal was to settle in the United States, although they would be satisfied to stay in Britain if they had no other choice. But for the meantime, they'll be provided with food, shelter and social security benefits in Britain.

The acceptance of the refugees from the Sibonga had done little to solve the problems faced by authorities in Hong Kong -- where boatloads of Vietnamese are arriving at a rate of up to three thousand a day.
