Background: IN THE UNITED STATES, AMBASSADORS FROM 28 COUNTRIES HAVE BEEN TAKING A LOOK AT HOW AMERICA MAKES SALT WATER DRINKABLE. THEY WENT TO FREEPORT, TEXAS, ON WEDNESDAY TO INSPECT AMERICA'S FIRST SALT WATER CONVERSION PLANT. THEIR HOST WAS THE INTERIOR SECRETARY, MR. STEWART UDALL.

THE AMBASSADORS REPRESENTED: GHANA, LIBYA, MALAGASY, MAURITANIA, SOMALIA, SUDAN, TUNISIA, AUSTRALIA, TAIWAN, ALGERIA, IPAN, ISRAEL, KUWAIT, PAKISTAN, LEBANON, SAUDI ARABIA, TURKEY, ITALY, BULGARIA, FINLAND, GREAT BRITAIN, POLAND, SPAIN, BRAZIL, CHILE, MEXICO, NICARAGUA, CANADA.

MR. UDALL TOLD THE VISITORS THAT THE PLANT HAD BEEN BUILT IN 1961. HE PREDICTED THAT THE PROCESS WOULD BECOME WIDELY USED AROUND THE WORLD DURING THE NEXT TEN YEARS.

THIS PLANT PRODUCES ABOUT 1,100,000 GALLONS OF FRESH WATER A DAY. SOME OF IT IS USED BY AN ADJACENT CHEMICAL FACTORY - BUT MOST OF IT IS PIPED INTO THE DOMESTIC SUPPLY FOR THE CITY OF FREEPORT, ON THE GULF OF MEXICO.

IT WAS EXPLAINED TO THE AMBASSADORS THAT THIS METHOD OF PRODUCING FRESH WATER WAS NOT AS EXPENSIVE AS IT WAS SOMETIMES THOUGHT. WATER COSTS ABOUT A DOLLAR FOR EACH THOUSAND GALLONS LEAVING THE PLANT.

THE UNITED STATES IS TO BE HOST AT A WATER CONFERENCE IN OCTOBER, WHEN SCIENTISTS FORM MANY COUNTRIES WILL STUDY THE TECHNOLOGICAL PROBLEMS OF THE DE-SALINISATION OF WATER.
