TRANSCRIPT: WILSON: "MR. PRESIDENT, IT IS A GREAT PLEASURE, ON BEHALF OF HER MAJESTY'S GOVERNMENT, TO WELCOME YOU TO BRITAIN. EQUALLY, MY COLLEAGUES JOIN WITH ME IN WELCOMING THE SECRETARY OF STATE AND YOUR OTHER DISTINGUISHED COLLEAGUES. YOU HAVE SAID, M.R PRESIDENT, THAT YOUR PURPOSE IN VISITING EUROPE IS TO WORK, TO OBSERVE AND TO DISCUSS. NIXON: "THE PURPOSE OF THIS VISIT, AS YOU HAVE SO VERY ACCURATELY INDICATED, IS TO DISCUSS OUR COMMON PROBLEMS, BUT BEYOND THAT TO DISCUSS THE PROBLEMS OF THE ALLIANCE OF WHICH WE ARE A PART, AND I WOULD ADD ONE FURTHER DIMENSION--TO DISCUSS THE PROBLEMS OF THE WORLD IN WHICH WE MAY NOT HAVE A DIRECT INTEREST, ONE COUNTRY OR THE OTHER, BUT IN WHICH BOTH OF US HAVE RESPONSIBILITIES TO ADOPT THOSE POLICIES WHICH WILL PROMOTE A BETTER WAY TO PEACE IN THE WORLD."

Background: U.S. PRESIDENT NIXON FLEW INTO LONDON AIRPORT TONIGHT ON THE SECOND LEG OF HIS FIVE-NATION EUROPEAN TOUR AND GOT STRAIGHT DOWN TO TALKS WITH BRITISH PRIME MINISTER HAROLD WILSON. PRESIDENT NIXON, WHO FLEW IN FROM BELGIUM WHERE HE STARTED HIS EIGHT-DAY TOUR LAST NIGHT, IS MAKING THE FIRST VISIT TO BRITAIN BY AN AMERICAN PRESIDENT FOR SIX YEARS.

THE PRESIDENTIAL JET AIRCRAFT LANDED AT LONDON'S HEATHROW AIRPORT SHORTLY BEFORE SIX O'CLOCK LOCAL TIME, A FEW MINUTES BEHIND SCHEDULE AFTER BEING DELAYED BY FOG. STRICT SECURITY PRECAUTIOUS WERE OBSERVED AT THE AIRPORT.

MR. NIXON WAS MET BY THE LORD CHAMBERLAIN, LORD COBBOLD, WHO REPRESENTED QUEEN ELIZABETH, THE U.S. AMBASSADOR IN LONDON, MR. DAVID BRUCE, AND MR. WILSON WHO OFFICIALLY WELCOMED HIM TO BRITAIN.

IT HAD BEEN PLANNED THAT WHEN THE WELCOMING CEREMONIES AT THE AIRPORT WERE OVER, PRESIDENT NIXON AND MR. WILSON WOULD FLY BY HELICOPTER TO CHEQUERS--THE OFFICIAL BUCKING HAMSHIRE COUNTRY RESIDENCE OF THE BRITISH PRIME MINISTER, SOME 30 MILES (APPROXIMATELY 48 KMS) FROM LONDON--BUT BECAUSE OF THE FOG IT WAS DECIDED TO TRAVEL THERE BY ROAD.

AT CHEQUERS, MR. NIXON AND MR. WILSON WERE JOINED FOR INFORMAL PHOTOGRAPHS BY BRITISH FOREIGN SECRETARY MICHAEL STEWART AND U.S. SECRETARY OF STATE WILLIAM RODGERS BEFORE THEY HAD DINNER AND THEN IMMEDIATELY STARTED ON TALKS WHICH WERE TO BE CONTINUED AT DOWNING STREET--THE PRIME MINISTER'S OFFICIAL LONDON RESIDENCE TOMORROW.
