Background: For over a hundred years it has been the custom at the Amsterdam Zoo to admit visitors on Ascension Day for half the usual price.
So today the Amsterdam citizens made the most of the reduction and, following tradition, took their families along to see the animals desporting themselves in their cages and enclosures.
They went along armed with bread, biscuits, sweets and so on... anything they thought might tempt the inmates of the zoo.....though whether this varied fare was suitable to the digestive organs of the recipients is quite another matter.
As is almost always the way, the penguins, in orderly array, were foremost among their fellow animals in parading for titbits before an amused and admiring audience.
Young lovers as well as fathers, mothers and kiddies responded to Amsterdam's Zoological attractions on this Ascension Day.
