Background: NEARLY A THOUSAND RESIDENTS DEMONSTRATED IN GIBRALTAR TODAY (FRIDAY) FOR AN END TO SPANISH BORDER RESTRICTIONS. SHOPS CLOSED AS THEY MASSED OUTSIDE THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL BUILDING, WHERE THE BRITISH COLONY'S NEW COALITION GOVERNMENT WAS MEETING FOR THE FIRST TIME.

THE DEMONSTRATION, ORGANISED BY THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE, WAS TO PROTEST AGAINST THE GIBRALTAR GOVERNMENT'S ATTITUDE IN THE NINE MONTHS THE RESTRICTIONS HAVE BEEN IN FORCE. SHOPS AND OFFICER WERE ASKED TO CLOSE FOR NINETY MINUTES WHILE IT TOOK PLACE.

MEANWHILE, THE GOVERNMENT AND OPPOSITION PARTIES HAVE AGREED TO SETTLE THEIR DIFFERENCES AND FORM A COALITION, APPARENTLY TO PRESENT A UNITED FRONT AGAINST THE RESTRICTIONS, IMPOSED BY THE SPANISH GOVERNMENT TO STAMP OUT SMUGGLING.

THE DEMONSTRATION, SMALLER THAN EXPECTED, PASSED OFF. PEACEFULLY.
