Background: The first matches of the European Zone of the Davis Cup Tennis Tournament have been held at the Toksim Tennis Club Istanbul during the past few days, when Turkey played Chili. Although the Zone is called 'European' each year four countries from outside Europe are permitted to play against the 20 accepted from Europe. Some countries regard the European Zone of the Davis Cup as a valuable training ground for the Wimbledon competition.
Two thousand spectators saw the Chilean tennis ace, AYALA, best GUREL of Turkey 6/1, 6/1, 6/2, in a contest which never really extended the Chilean player.
The second match between Rodrigez of Chili and Bari of Turkey produced a most exciting second set which Rodrigez had to fight to win at 10/8. The final result was 6/3, 10/8, 6/1, with both playing a hard-hitting 'modern' game.
The final of the European Zone of the Davis Cup, which last year was won by Australia who best America in a long-to-be- remembered contest, will be held some time during the 1st week in August. The winners of each of the three zones, the European, the American and the Australian, will then met sometime before December for the final.
