Background: ENGLAND, THE WORLD SOCCER CHAMPIONS, HAD A CONVINCING 3-1 WIN OVER SWEDEN TONIGHT IN THEIR INTERNATIONAL FRIENDLY MATCH IN LONDON'S WEMBLEY STADIUM. A CROWD OF 72,000 TURNED OUT TO SEE THE MATCH.

BOBBY CHARLTON OF ENGLAND SET A WORLD SCORING RECORD WITH ENGLAND'S SECOND GOAL OF THE MATCH, SHORTLY BEFORE THE HALF-TIME BELL.

ONLY TWO MINUTES EARLIER ENGLAND'S MARTIN PETERS HAD PUT HIS TEAM INTO THE LEAD WITH THE FIRST GOAL OF THE MATCH. CHARLTON'S GOAL WAS HIS 45TH FOR ENGLAND, BEATING THE PREVIOUS BEST OF 44 SET BY JIMMY GREAVES. CHARLTON DID NOT COME OUT FOR THE SECOND HALF -- HE WAS REPLACED BY GEOFF HURST. CHARLTON'S ABSENCE, THE RESULT OF A S?IN INJURY, ROBBED ENGLAND OF ITS POWER, AND SWEDEN MADE SOME VIGOROUS SORTIES AGAINST THE ENGLISH GOAL.

BUT ENGLAND, TOWARDS THE END OF THE MATCH, MADE THE SCORE 3-0 WHEN ROGER HUNT SENT THE BALL HOME OFF A DRIVE FROM KEITH NEWTON.

SWEDEN HAD SOME CONSOLATION, HOWEVER, WHEN ROLF ANDERSSON SCORED WITH THE FINAL KICK OF THE MATCH. IN THEIR LAST VISIT TO ENGLAND, NINE YEARS AGO, SWEDEN DEFEATED THE ENGLISH TEAM 3-2.
