    Background: KYALAMI, SOUTH AFRICA

Motor racing ... and Niki Lauda, the 1975 and 1977 World Champion, won the South African Grand Prix on April 7, giving the McLaren team their second victory this year. Lauda won comfortably from fellow teammate Alain Prost, of France. Last month Prost won the season's first Grand Prix in Brazil.

He started the Kyalami race in last place from the pit lane in his back-up car after his regular machine developed fuel problems on the grid. The race-start was held up 15 minutes because Elio Angeli's Lotus had a stalled engine. Keke Rosberg of Finland, led from the grid in a Williams but was quickly overtaken by World Champion Nelson Piquet, of Brazil, in his Brabham. Brabham had a dismal day with Italian Teo Fabi dropping out, and Piquet forced to change a wheel after holding the lead for 22 laps, before retiring on the 31st lap. Once Piquet went into the pits, it was Lauda's race except for a brief period when he lost the lead because of a type chance. Prost moved into second place by overtaking Jacques Laffite. Third place went to Britain's Derek Warwick in a Renault.
