    Background: Mr. Cearbhall O. Dalaigh was sworn in as the fifth President of the Irish Republic in Dublin on Thursday (19 December).

    Security was tight at the ceremony, which was attended by State, civic, diplomatic and religious leaders of various denominations.

    Mr. O. Dalaigh, a former Chef Justice and Judge at the European Community Courts in Luxembourg, succeeds President Erskine Childers, who died suddenly of a heart attack last month. A statement from Eire's three main political parties on 29 November said that they had agreed on Mr. O. Dalaigh as an all-party candidate for the Presidency.

    A short civic ceremony was held in Dublin Castle on Thursday, which was followed by religious ceremonies at St. Patrick's Cathedral. a 21-gun salute was fired from Dublin's collins Barracks.
