Background: Thirty-three Tibetan boys, among thousands of children who fled with the Dalai Lama to India, are currently living at Aalstrup in Denmark. The Dalai Lama appealed to Denmark for help - and the boys will be staying there for the next six years.

Some of the boys have no families ... other have relatives still living in Tibet. They are now at a special school where they are learning Danish. Later, they will start apprenticeships on Danish farms or in factories. Meanwhile there is a classroom reminder for them of the Dalai Lama: an autographed picture of him on the wall.

Recently, he sent the boys a letter to mark the start of their New Year. And the boys - all aged between 14 and 16 - placed daily offerings on a table to mark their year's beginning. The table will stand, with the gifts, for 14 days; and when that period is over, the offerings are thrown away. An eastern tradition in a western world.
