Background: Sir Maurice Laing and the crew of the Loujaine completed the Cowes week double on Thursday (5 August) when they won the New York Yacht Club Trophy after winning the Britannia Cup earlier in the week.

SYNOPSIS: The 30 yachts were hampered by bad sailing conditions with near calms taking a bog toll at the start of the races. For the first time in the week's racing, all five offshore classes were sent westwards with the last of the ebb tide.

The first class to start was class one and included in its ranks was Spirit of Delft crewed by Dr. W.M. Oosterwijk of Holland.

Overall second placegetter was Morning Cloud, crewed by Edward Heath, former British Prime Minister. He won the event in 1973. Other contestants in class on included Battlecry, entered by J.O. Prentice of Britain and Standfast, a Dutch yacht.

Two British yachts, High Rider and Eleuthera, were among the class two yachts to take part in the 30-mile course.

The New York Yacht Cup Trophy was first presented in 1951 and this year the British Royal Yacht Squadron Club presented a reciprocal trophy as part of the American bicentennial celebrations.
