Background: The Australian 12 metre racing yacht, Gretel, is having an extensive refit in Sydney, during which major changes are being made to her hull and gear. This is what Gretel looked liked before she left to challenge for the America's Cup last year. In America, before the challenge series began, the position of her mast was altered slightly.
Gretel was beaten by four races to one, by Weatherly, the American defender; but she acquitted herself well on the Americans home waters. Now, Gretel is undergoing major alterations at a Sydney boat builder's yard.
About three feet has been cut from Gretel's finely streamlined stern, leaving her with a blunter stern shape. The new stern was fashioned under the supervision of Alan Payne, the designer of Gretel. It was necessary because of changes in the forrard section of the boat. Mr. Payne said today the removal of the stern section had rid Gretel of one hundred pounds of dead weight.
Gretel's mast is again being moved - this time about one foot cutting nearer the bow. The whole rig of the yacht will be moved the same amount. The steering will be fitted with reduction gear to ease the physical effort needed from the helmsman. Because of the other changes, the coffee grinder winches, in the foreground, will be repositioned for their work of raising and lowering sail. The cockpit has been made self bailing, because it shipped water during the America's cup series.
