Background: INTRODUCTION: Zambia, playing an attacking style of football, defeated Zimbabwe 1-0 when they met in Salisbury on Sunday (12 April) for their first round match of the African nations Soccer Cup. A capacity crowd of 30,000 attended.

SYNOPSIS: President Canaan Banana and Prime Minister Robert Mugabe were there to greet the players before the start of the match. It was the first official match between the two countries for nearly 20 years. The African Nations Cup Soccer brings together many African countries in the continent's premier soccer championship.

Zambia, playing right to left in the light uniform moved into attack from the start. They favoured the right wing, getting the ball through to Willi Phiri...only to be stopped by Zimbabwe goalie Bruce Grobbelaar.

Another attack along the right wing by Zambia, this time to the foot of Peter Kaumba.

Zimbabwe were not long in returning the attack. But they were not able to complete their moves.

Closely watched by President Banana and Mr. Mugabe, Zambia broke away in the 12th minute, again from an attack along the right wing. This time Kaumba found the net.

Zimbabwe were maintaining their pressure and, in a goalmouth flurry, were unlucky not to equalise.

In other first round matches of the Cup series, Zaire defeated Mozambique 2-1, Egypt beat Kenya 5-3 and Cameroon beat Togo 4-0.
