Background: The 14th annual Europe Cup water polo competition started at the Crystal Palace national sports centre in London, England on Friday night (22 October).
SYNOPSIS: In the opening match the Yugoslav champions, Partisan Belgrade, met the top Turkish side, Istanbul. The Europa Cup is contested by the league champion club of each European country. Partisan are one of the top European clubs and have already won the Europa Cup four times. The other clubs playing in the competition in London were Polytechnic from the United Kingdom, Cervana Huiezda Kosice of Czechoslovakia and Marseilles of France.
As well as the London section, other series of matches were being played in Den Haag, Sofia and Wurzburg. Altogether 17 clubs are playing and of these eight will go through to the semi-finals. In the opening match, the Yugoslavs started strongly and led by eight goals to three at half time.
The United Kingdom's representative, Polytechnic, have entered the competition for the fourth time. They have been British national league champions for the past five years, and expect to do well in the Europa Cup.
In Friday's opening match, Partisan Belgrade showed the skill that had won them the competition four times before. They led the Turkish champions from the start. Their superior speed in the water, and their more positive approach near goal, kept them well ahead of Istanbul, and they eventually won by 16 goals to four.
