Background: President Tombalbaye of Chad announced on Monday (6 September) that his government had banned all air links between Chad and Libya following last month's abortive coup against him.

The President made the announcement at a press conference on the coup, in which Chad had accused Libya of being involved.

Chad severed its diplomatic relations on August 25, claiming Libya had interfered with the aid of an imperialist power in Chad's internal affairs.

SYNOPSIS: In Fort Lamy on Monday, the President of Chad, Francois Tombalbaye held a press conference on last month's attempted coup. He announced that his government had banned all air links with Libya. The President broke off diplomatic relations with Libya after the coup attempt claiming that Libya, with the aid of an imperialist power, had interfered in the internal affairs of Chad.

President Tombalbaye said his people did not attack the people of Libya but the country's leader, Muammar Gaddafi. He indicated that he would bring the issue before the Organisation of African Unity.

President Tombalbaye said the aim of the coup was nothing less than the establishment of a puppet government, which would have made the nation submit ideologically to outside powers.
