Background: Sport, and with less than two months to go before the Winter Olympics, the Soviet Union's top seeded figure skaters have been going through their paces in Leningrad. The competition was one of many being held in the Soviet Union at the moment to ensure that Russia is again placed among the world's leaders when they meet for the Winter Games in Lake Placid, New York State.
The competition saw the Soviet Union's undisputed pairs champions, Irina Rodnina and Alex Zaitseve, again skating into first position in the paris event.
Rodnina and Zaitsev's final score, a perfect six.
Taking first place in the ice dance programme event were Natalia Linichuk and Gennadi Karponosov.
And, in first place in the individual short programme was Vladimir Kovalyov.
