Background: Crippled gunman Denis Job tonight (Tuesday) surrendered the last two of his 12 children, ending a four-day siege at his house at a village in northeast France. After handling over the two eldest children, son Pascal (14) and daughter Claudina (11), the 33-year-old Job climbed into a psychiatrist's car parked behind the house.

The siege began four days earlier after police found the body of Job's wife Renee on nearby railway tracks: she had been killed by a shotgun blast in the back.

Police were anxious to avoid a repetition of the tragedy near Bordeaux two years ago, when a bulldozer driver shot himself and his two children after a similar siege. Reporters and cameramen were not permitted to approach the house -- a disused railway station -- during the siege.
