Background: The first of the tricks which took about 200 tons of Israeli food, medicine and blankets to Amman at the weekend, returned over the Allanby Bridge on Saturday evening. The trucks, owned by Arabs from the West Bank, did not bring back any wounded or refugees as had ben expected.

The drivers reported that the battle damage in Amman was not as great as had been feared. The main destruction was in the refugee camps. They saw few injured in the streets.

On their way to Amman the trucks were stopped by Jordanian Army units at Shunah, about six miles (10 kms) from Allenby Bridge. The soldiers were suspicious that the trucks might have weapons concealed among the relief supplies. The drivers were allowed to continue after a search.

Later they were stopped once by guerrillas who took some sacks of flour, sugar and a large quantity of soya oil.

On arrival in Amman, the relief food was stored in warehouses by soldiers an officials.

Red Cross cars which returned with the convoy brought letters from Arabs to relatives in the Israeli-held territories. But the letters gave only brief information of the condition of the writers after the fighting.

The Jordan Government claims that there were a minimum of 2,500 casualties in the civil war. Earlier assessments from the guerrilla side had alleged the figure might be as high as 30,000.
