In Norway are over I million brutto reg.tons been laid up in 1959, mostly tankships tonnage are badly hit. 18 ships are in 1959 been sold for break up, it will be about 55 - 60.000 reg.tons. All over the world are there in 1959 been sold and break up about 2 1/2 million reg.tons. 12% of the norwegian ships are been laid up.
Lloyds world account say that in 1959 until october Ist there are laid up near 9 million reg.tons of ships tonnage all over the world. Norway has as told one of the nine million reg.tons.
The situation will be the same in Denmark and Sweden and the numbers of ships laid up will be near the same. In Denmark was 35 ships laid up in 59, or about 180.000 reg. tons.
Liberia the situaitone will be more badly in laid up ship, there are near 20% of the ships tonnage laid up.
Many new ship build in norway are been sold advance, and if not they can go from the shipsyard to the place for laid up, there are none cargo. Outside Oslo there will at the moment be about 43 ships laid up, just waiting for cargo, or to be sold as old iron.
In 1959 there are been build new ships, where the tonnage will be about 9 million reg. tons. But many of them are not been used, just laid up. Waiting for better days.
A walk in the harbours will just show a lots of ship laid up, Norway has one of the biggest cargo fleet in the world. Nobody know when the days will come when there again will be used for the many million tons of tonnage, but now it will only cost mony to build a tankship.
