Background: Since Saturday (3 February), Algerian expatriates in France have been going to the polling booths to vote for a successor to Algeria's late President Houari Boumedienne. IN Algeria itself, voting will be done on Wednesday (7 February).

SYNOPSIS: Special polling stations were set-up in the Algerian Consulate, to give Algerians living in France a change to vote 'yes' or 'no' to the nomination of Colonel Benjedid Chadli as the North African country's new President. The congress of Algeria's only political party, the National Liberation Front (F.L.N.) nominated Colonel Chadli on Wednesday (31 January) after a four-day session in Algiers.

Colonel Chadli became acting chief of defence during Boumedienne's illness, and was the link between the army and Algeria's interim ruling Revolutionary Council. Next Wednesday (7 February), Algerians at home will decided in a national election whether to accept Colonel Chadli's nominations or not. he is the only presidential candidate.

These expatriates are about a twentieth of the total Algerian electorate. The polling boots in Paris will shut on Wednesday, and all returns will be officially announced in Algiers on Friday (9 February).
