Background: A rally by thousands of leftists and students angered by the continued detention of 126 anti-Le Pen demonstrators blocked the streets of Athens on December 11. The protestors marched from the city's university campus towards the security police headquarters and the parliament, demanding the release of their imprisoned comrades. The arrests had been made during a visit by right-wing French politician Jean-Marie Le Pen in early December, when several hundred youths were involved in clashes with police that escalated into running battles and the throwing of stones and petrol bombs. The demonstrators had been angered by Le Pen's open support for imprisoned Greek generals. Their military junta was overthrown in 1974 after their seizure of power by military coup in 1967. The demonstration calling for the release of the detainees passed off without incident.
