Background: A table tennis team from the People's Republic of China arrived in Britain on Monday (6 December) to begin a two-week tour.

The Chinese team will play table tennis against English, Scottish, Welsh and Irish teams during the tour, which is a return visit promised by Chinese Premier Chou En-lai in Peking last April.

Shortly after its arrival the Chinese team visited the Hawker Siddeley Aviation Company Limited, which recently contracted to supply China with six Trident 2E airlines worth about 20 million sterling.

SYNOPSIS: At the headquarters of the Hawker Siddeley Aviation Company in Hatfield, on Monday, officials waited to greet a table tennis team from the People's Republic of China. It was the first visit to Britain by a Chinese sports team for six years. The Chinese team was greeted by Doctor Roger Banister, the head of Britain's National Sports Council, and Mr Pei, the Chinese Charge d'Affaires in London. Other officials were from Hawker Siddeley Aviation and the British Table Tennis Association.

The Chinese team had arrived in Britain in a Hawker Siddeley aircraft and were later taken on a tour of the plant where Trident 2E's are being constructed under the recently-signed 20 million pound contract to supply Chins with six airlines.

The Trident 2E is one of the fastest Airliners in current production, flying close to the speed of sound. It can carry up to 140 passengers and has a range of 2,400 miles (4,000 kms). Hawker Siddeley hope to gain more orders for the larger, short-haul version of their aircraft -- the Trident 3B.

The Chinese table tennis team will play matches in England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland during its two-week tour. Most of the team members represented China in the recent world championships in Tokyo, and large crowds are expected to turn our for the matches in Britain.
