Background: IN DEFIANCE OF A GOVERNMENT BAN ON ALL OPEN-AIR ASSEMBLIES FOLLOWING THE SECTARIAN VIOLENCE THAT HAS ENGULFED NORTHERN IRELAND, THE ROMAN CATHOLIC ANCIENT ORDER OF HIBERNIANS YESTERDAY (15 AUGUST) HELD ITS ANNUAL PARADE THROUGH THE STREETS OF DUNGIVEN, COUNTY LONDONDERRY. THERE WAS, HOWEVER, NO TROUBLE APART FROM A FEW MINOR SCUFFLES.

BEFORE THE PARADE BEGAN, POLICE WARNED THE LEADERS THAT THEY WERE BREAKING THE LAW AND COULD EXPECT SERIOUS CONSEQUENCES IF THEY ALLOWED THE PARADE TO GO AHEAD. BUT THEY WERE BRUSHED ASIDE, AND LED BY PIPERS AND DRUMMERS, THE MARCHERS CARRIED OUT THEIR PARADE THROUGH THE STREETS OF DUNGIVEN.

ON THEIR ROUTE THEY PASSED THE GUTTED HOUSES THAT ARE THE SYMBOL OF THE WORST VIOLENCE THAT HAS HIT THE BRITISH PROVINCE SINCE THE SIX COUNTIES THAT FORM ULSTER WERE PARTITIONED FROM THE REST OF IRELAND IN THE EARLY 1920s.
