Background: The former British Amateur Cyclo-Cross Champion, Chris Dodd of Coventry Racing Club, won the first British Egg Scramble Cyclo-Cross event at Alexandra Palace, London, on Sunday (3 February). Dodd, who has twice held the British Amateur Championship title, led form the start, and finished just fifteen seconds ahead of his nearest rival, John Atkins, the National Professional Champion.

The race was over ten laps of a mile-and-a-half course, and it offered the biggest prize money of the season, with GBP 200 to be won by the first thirty competitors and the best team. It was sponsored by the British Eggs Authority as part of their "National Egg Week". The organisers of the race were the Wembley Road Club of London.

Only three foreign riders took part -- one from Poland, and two form Belgium. However the rest of the field included top British riders such as the currant Amateur Champion, Jeff Morris (Polytechnic), and Keith Mernickle (Chris Barber).

The race had offered a chance of revenge for John Atkins, as he had been beaten by both Morris and Dodd on the previous weekend. Although he crossed the finishing line ahead of Morris, he could only take second place to Dodd. Morris came third.
