Background: A former member of the People's Temple religious sect has been indicated for the alleged murder of a United States Congressman at Jonestown, Guyana in 1978. Congressman Leo Ryan was shot dead on an air strip near Jonestown after leading an inspection team into the sect's jungle headquarters. Within days of the shooting, U.S. troops moved into the guyana camp to find the bodies of more than 900 people, apparently the victims of a mass suicide.

SYNOPSIS: Larry Layton, an active supporter of sect leader Jim Jones, was extradited to San Francisco charged with the murder of Congressman Ryan and the attempted murder of diplomatic aide, Richard Dwyer. The Federal Court indictment accuses Layton of helping to coordinate the airport shooting.

Most of the victims of the Jonestown killings were Americans, but U.S. courts have no jurisdiction over the case. Layton appeared in a guyana court charged with murder, but was acquitted. His defence lawyers say they will be contesting the San Francisco indictment, hinting that they might raise a possible link between the ass suicide and activities of the Central Intelligence Agency. The Federal Court hearing begins on the 4th of December.
