Background: A NEW LOOK, MAY 19 AT HATFIELD AIRFIELD, ENGLAND, OF BRITAIN'S TWO PEDAL AIRCRAFT - CONTENDERS FOR THE GBP5,000 PRIZE OFFERED FOR THE WORLD'S FIRST MAN-POWERED FLIGHT OF ONE MILE.

NEWSMEN AT THE VIEWING HOPED TO SEE BOTH FLY BUT THE WEATHER WAS NOT RIGHT - BECAUSE OF THEIR VERY LIGHT WING LOADING THESE AIRCRAFT CANNOT BE SAFELY TAKEN FROM THE HANGAR, LET ALONE FLOWN, EXCEPT IN A FLAT CALM, AND THEY MUST NOT BE ALLOWED TO GET WET.

ONE OF THE PEDAL PLANES IS THE "PUFFIN", WINNER OF THE FIRST PRIZE AWARDED FOR MAN-POWERED FLIGHT. BY THE ROYAL AERONAUTICAL SOCIETY. PRIZE MONEY: GBP50. THIS WAS FOR THE HISTORIC FLIGHT. AT HATFIELD WHERE HJOHN WIMPENNY, THE PEDALPILOT, CYCLED ALOFT FOR HALF A MILE -AT AN AVERAGE HEIGHT OF FIVE FEET, AT ABOUT 19 1/2 MILES AN HOUR.

SECOND CONTENDER FOR THE GBP5,000 PRIZE - NO DATE IS FIXED YET FOR THE-RACE-BELONGS TO A SOUTHAMPTON UNIVERSITY GROUP WHOSE CHIEF DESIGNER IS A WOMAN - ANN MARSDEN. IT FLEW NOVEMBER 21 LAST YEAR FOR SOME 60 FEET - ALSO AT AN ALTITUDE OF FIVE FEET.
