???: Mr. President, distinguished members of the council, I do not have much to add to what is stated in my report on (indistinct) for the period of the past six months contained in document S/12453. I wish however to inform the Council that I have been informed by the Government of the Syrian Arab Republic of its assent to the extension of (indistinct) for a further period of six months. The Government of Israel has also conveyed to me its agreement. I wish to express my appreciation to the governments concerned for their spirit of cooperation in this regard."

Background: The United Nations Security Council has approved a six months extension of its peacekeeping mandate in the Golan Heights. The United Nations Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim noted that while he was pleased at the willingness of Syrian and Israel to continue the mandate, the Go??? issue was only one of the Middle East problems that remained unsolved. He said the situation as a whole would continue to be unstable and potentially dangerous, unless real progress could soon be made towards a settlement.
