    Background: JAPANESE POLICE ARRESTED 55 MEMBERS OF A RADICAL STUDENT GROUP YESTERDAY AT A MOUNTAIN CAMP NEAR KOFU, ABOUT 65 MILES (100 KILOMETRES) WEST OF TOKYO. POLICE SAID THEY BELIEVED THE STUDENTS WERE PREPARING AN ARMED ATTACK ON PRIME MINISTER SATO WHEN HE LEAVES LATER THIS MONTH FOR WASHINGTON.

    THE STUDENTS, INCLUDING TWO GIRLS, WERE ROUNDED UP IN A HUT ON DAIBOSATSU PEAK AFTER AN EARLY MORNING RAID BY 250 POLICE, SOME OF THEM WEARING RIOT UNIFORM. THE POLICE FOUND STEEL PIPES FILLED WITH EXPLOSIVE AND A QUANTITY OF AMMUNITION.

    THE STUDENTS WERE IDENTIFIED AS MEMBERS OF A GROUP CALLING ITSELF THE "RED ARMY", DESCRIBED AS A RADICAL FACTION OF THE COMMUNIST PARTY. THEY WERE ALL TAKEN BY LORRY TO TOKYO FOR QUESTIONING.

    PRIME MINISTER SATO IS SCHEDULED TO LEAVE TOKYO ON THE 17TH TO DISCUSS WITH PRESIDENT MERCI THE RETURN OF OKINAWA AND NEARBY ISLANDS.
