Background: Despite its war like title, the Day of the Fighter in Yugoslavia is famed nowadays for the lavish-scale picnic held on July 4th. One of the biggest is in Slovenia, where that only warlike thing about the event is the location--Skofja like castle.

The Day of the Fighter commemorates the efforts and sacrifice of Yugoslav partisans during World War Two, when the men often had to leave their families to join guerrilla groups in Slovenia's mountains. So nowadays, the emphasis at July 4th celebrations is on family reunions.

In a country of more than a million emigrant workers, tens of thousands return to Yugoslavia to rejoin their families for the July 4th picnics.

Many at the Skofja Loka Castle celebrations me from the United States, where July 4th -- Independence Day -- also traditionally celebrated by picnics. The largest single ground of 450 emigrants had travelled all the way from Minnesota. Others came from Ohio, Detroit, Philadelphia, New York and California.

Workers from most Western European countries also flocked back to their homeland. There were even emigrants from as far afield as Australia and Argentina.

Part of the traditional welcome for them included a nostrolgic programme of folk songs and dances.
