Background: French aerialist, Philippe Petit, entertained a crowd of 30,000 at Paterson in New Jersey on Monday (2 September) by walking a tight-rope across the Great Falls Gorge of the Passaic River.

Philippe, who is 25, took eight minutes to walk the 300-feet (91-metre) wire. Dressed in white trousers and a silver shirt Petit paused briefly twice to balance on one leg. Music from loudspeakers accompanied his act.

The walk was the climax of the town's Labour Day festival and Petit received a 5000 - U.S. - dollar fee (about GBP 2,000 sterling) for the feat.

Early last month, Petit surprised and entertained crowds in New York by walking a wire stretched between the towers of the World Trade Centre, a quarter of a mile above street level.
