Background: British European Airways Chairman, Lord Douglas of Kirtleside, was awakened from his bed at 7 a.m. Apl 9, by demonstrators complaining of excessive noise from night-flying jet aircraft. Lord Douglas lives at Denham, Buckinghamshire, well out of ear-shot of London Airport.

Eighty demonstrators led by 48-year old John Connell, company director and organiser of the Noise Abatement Society brought Lord and Lady Douglas to their door. Mr. Connell begged Lord Douglas "to cease night jet flights.... an unprovoked assault on thousands of people living around the Airport." When Lord Douglas said Comet jets were quieter than many other aircraft used, someone called "Rubbish"; the meeting's tone then changed for the worse, with BEA Chairman telling Mr. Connell he had not intention of being insulted by a demagogue, and shutting the door.

This was the second early-morning demonstration by the Noise Abatement Society; last week Aviation Minister Duncan Sandys was their target.
