Background: The secretary of Spain's Communist Party, Mr. Santiago Carrillo, has called for an agreement among all political groups in Spain, thereby creating a democratic frame of political freedom.
Speaking in Paris on Thursday (20 November) he said he doubted to capabilities of Prince Juan Carlos...who took over the leadership of Spain after the death of General Franco on Thursday, Prince Carlos will be officially installed in office on Saturday (22 November).
Mr. Carrillo, who has been living in exile in France, said the future of Spain must be a democratic one. That meant the country must overtake the state of Civil War which has been sustained by Franco for more than forty years.
He called for a reconciliation of the Spanish people so that a democratic society could be established...a society of political freedom where everybody could express themselves freely.
Meanwhile, the Spanish Embassy in the French capital has started a Remembrance Book for Franco and this is being signed by hundreds of people. But not all of France is mourning Franco's death. Spanish Basque refugees, whose hate for the General developed into a passion passed from generation to generation, celebrated his death with dancing in the streets and toasts in Champagne.
More than half a million refugees from Spain poured into France at the end of the Spanish Civil War in 1939.
