Background: In Athens, preparations for the start of a new restoration programme for historical monuments on the city's Acropolis were under way on December 22. Work is to begin soon on the buildings' east side. To prepare for this workmen erected scaffolding, while stonemasons cut blocks for building. One of the first tasks due to be completed is the reinforcing and replacement for the corroded and awry columns of the 2,300-year-old Parthenon. The ten-year programme is being funded by the Greek government, the EEC (European Economic Community) and UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation). Archaeologists and engineers are to replace the rusted iron supports from earlier restoration attempts with steel rods, coated with rust-proof titanium to preserve the columns of the Parthenon. The city's corrosive smog of sulphur dioxide has eaten into the marble, turning it to sand, and caused the Greek authorities to remove to an indoor museum four caryatids (female figures used as pillars in the Erecteum, the second largest temple on the Acropolis). They were placed in a showcase with inert gas to stop any further decay. While workmen are to use scaffolding on some parts of the Acropolis, large collapsible cranes are to be erected daily and withdrawn each evening to preserve as much as possible of the city's skyline.
