Background: Amid festive scenes, one of the founder members of the Palestine Liberation Organisation, Mr. Abu Jihad, attended the graduation ceremony of fighters of Fatah, the biggest Palestinian commando group.
SYNOPSIS: On Monday (December 15), about 200 fighters of Fatah, the most powerful Palestinian commando organisation, graduated at a ceremony in the Arab University in Beirut, Mr. Abu Jihad who heads the military branch of Fatah and is one of the leading members of the Palestine Movement attended the ceremony. The Palestine Liberation Organisation claims to be stronger than ever and more optimistic. In Lebanon, where the guerrillas have most of their camps, military training continues. Recruits are not given an easy time despite the Palestine leaders' belief that there is now a need for diplomatic efforts to attain their goal of a homeland.
Abu Jihad, also known as Khalil Al Wazir, is responsible for all military operations mounted by PLO. Often described as Yasser Arafat's right hand man he is a strong believer in escalating the struggle against Israel.
In terms of manpower and firepower the Fatah fighters are considerably more potent than they were tow years ago. Palestinian leaders say they are determined that the Palestinian people will not be liquidated despite what they call the numerous conspiracies against them. They say they want a secular state in the whole of Palestine in which Jews and Arabs can live together and that they will march on to victory.
