Background: All in the cause of safety, New York driver Ernest Clemons speeds into a head-on crash at 30 miles an hour. Then, just to prove how easy it is, he does it again - at 40 miles and hour.

He was demonstrating a tip-back seat designed to reduce highway casualties, before delegates of the U.S. National Safety Congress in Chicago.

As the car strikes another vehicle, a trigger is set off on the bumper bar. A hydraulic system comes into action, tilts the front seat back 30 degrees and slides it forward.

    And Clemons walks away unhurt.

The device, designed by inventor Roger Racine, is being developed by a New York firm.
