Background: Jim Bunning of the Philadelphia Phillies pitched the first perfect game in the National Baseball League in 84 years Sunday (21 June) when he retired all 27 New York Met batters at Shea Stadium in New York. The Phils won the game, the first of a doubleheader, 6-0, before more than 32,000 fans who stood and screamed for Bunning during the last two innings. Bunning struck out 10 batters.

The last strike to complete the perfect game -- no hits, no runs, no one on base -- was a low change-up curve to pinch-hitter Johnny Stephenson.

Bunning became the first pitcher since 1901 to hurl a no-hitter in each major league. With the Detroit Tigers, Bunning held the Boston Red Sox hitless on 20 July 1958.
