Background: A West German Professor is being tried in Israel on charges of passing secret information to an East European agent. He is Professor Kurt Sitte, and the trial opened at Haifa, Israel, Nov. 10.
His defence counsel pleaded for an open trial, but after hearing details of the charges the court decided the trial should be held in secret.
Sitte, born in Sudetenland and now a West German citizen, was a refugee from Nazism and has worked in Britain and the U.S.A. He went to Israel in 1954 and until his arrest earlier this year was head of the physics department of the Israel Institute of Technology.
