Background: Mexico made a great start to their World Cup soccer qualifying programme, when they beat Haiti 4-1 in Mexico City on Sunday (9 October). Haiti had knocked them out in the qualifying stages for the last World Cup finals in West Germany, but this time the Mexicans made no mistake.

SYNOPSIS: The magnificent Aztec Stadium was packed for the match, and the Mexicans, playing from right to left, made a tremendous start, scoring the first goal after only 30 seconds. From the kick-off the ball went down the right wing, and was crossed for Hugo Sanchez to score with a fine header. It was a superb goal, and just the start the Mexicans had been hoping for.

Mexico continued to dominate, and looked like scoring again, but with the goalkeeper stranded, the ball was scrambled away and cleared upfield.

It was still 1-0 at half time, but when play restarted after the interval, Mexico soon went further ahead. Haiti kicked off, but a bad back pass let in Victor Rangel, who raced clear to score.

Rangel, who had come on as substitute for Jiminez, made it 3-0 in the 65th minute with a tremendous right food volley.

Haiti's goal came in the 78th minute. A corner came over from the left, and Auguste rose high to head it in.

Rangel made it 4-1, when he completed a fine hat-trick, with a low drive after 82 minutes.

By this stage the Mexicans were well in control and continued to pile on the pressure until the final whistle.
