Background: The oil scourge which has plagued, not only the coast of Sweden, but waters all over the world is about to be conquered, say the Swedes. Bjurgardsvarvot, Stockholm, was the scene of the launching of a fantastic water craft - an 'oil-gatherer' which can skim from the water's surface, unwanted layers of oil.
The inventor is Sweden's Gustav Esser, and the Northern Oil Damages Association was invited to the launching and a demonstration. The machine functions in this way: Sack-cloth and a chain pump are lowered into the patch of oil which is gathered up and passed into receptacles on board. The boat is self-propelling and makes six knots.
