    Background: FOLLOWING PRESIDENT NIXON'S DECISION TO ATTACK COMMUNIST SANCTUARIES IN CAMBODIA, COMBINED U.S. AND SOUTH VIETNAMESE FORCES TODAY (FRIDAY, MAY 1) POURED INTO THE "FISH HOOK" AND "PARROT'S BEAK" SECTIONS OF THE COUNTRY. BOTH AREAS JUT INTO SOUTH VIETNAM.

    THE U.S. COMMAND WOULD NOT DISCLOSE THE EXACT SIZE OF THE TASK FORCE IN CAMBODIA, BUT IT IS BELIEVED SOME 8,000 U.S. TROOPS ARE INVOLVED, INCLUDING ELEMENTS OF THE U.S. FIRST AIR CAVALRY DIVISION AND THE ENTIRE 11TH ARMOURED CAVALRY REGIMENT. ABOUT 2,000 SOUTH VIETNAMESE FORCES ARE SAID TO BE INVOLVED, MAKING A TOTAL FORCE OF 10,000 MEN.

    ABOUT 8,000 AMERICAN AND SOUTH VIETNAMESE PARATROOPERS ENCIRCLED AN AREA BELIEVED AREA BELIEVED TO CONTAIN THE VIET CONG HIGH COMMAND ABOUT FOUR MILES (SIX KILOMETRES) FROM THE SOUTH VIETNAMESE BORDER.

    THREE SOUTH VIETNAMESE ARMOURED COLUMNS CONTINUED THEIR OFFENSIVE -- STARTED TWO DAYS AGO -- INTO THE "PARROT'S BEAK" AREA, TO DESTROY VIET CONG POSITIONS AND SUPPLY BASES.

    SOUTH VIETNAMESE TASK FORCE NUMBER 333 -- SHOWN IN THIS FILM -- IS ACCOMPANIED FOR THE FIRST TIME BY U.S. ADVISORS. EACH BATTALION IS ACCOMPANIED BY TWO AMERICANS.

    THE AMERICANS ARE UNDER ORDERS NOT TO TALK TO U.S. NEWSMEN.
