    Background: SZCZEZIN, POLAND

The current Polish-East German border has been defended by a youth leader at a rally in the port of Szczezin on April 15. A march-past of local youth movements organised by the Volunteer Juvenile Workers (OHP) - a paramilitary organisation -- included groups from the Rural Youth Union (ZMW), a regional fold dance ensemble and members of the Union of Socialist Youth of Poland (ZSMP). Among officials taking the salute were Jerzy Jaskiernia, President of the main board of ZSMP, Waldemar Swirgon, Secretary-General of the PUWM, (Polish Communist Party), Edward Osobka-Moranksi, former Premier, and Jerzy Kochanski, President of the local area committee of ZSMP. jaskiernia and Swirgon mentioned the important role of the youth movements in the struggle for peace and the future of Poland. Kochanski also swore an oath to guard the future of the Baltic seaport and the current border along the town of Nysa adn the River Odra. This was seen as a response to a statement last month by West Germany's Interior Minister. Friedrich Zimmerman, who told a meeting of German refugees that a group of exiled farmers wanted to reclaim land, formerly German, but now Polish. The current Poland-East German border, drawn up at the Potsdam Conference in 1945, the Nysa-Odra line, (Neisse-Oder line), was recognised in 1950 by East Germany, but did not receive approval in West Germany until 1963.
