Background: India's foreign Minister, Mr. Swaran Singh, was received by Iraq's President Ahmed Hassan Al Bakr last Thursday (May 24) during a three day official visit to Iraq's capital, Baghdad.
The same day, Mr. Swaran Singh had talks with the Vice Chairman of Iraq's Revolutionary Command Council, Saddam Hussein. The Council is Iraq's highest national authority under a provisional constitution issued in 1968.
Mr. Singh had taken part in talks with senior Iraqi government officials. He said he regarded India's relations with iraq as deep and cordial. Last month, Iraq and India signed five trade and co-operation agreements. The agreements form part of a policy by India to buy crude oil supplies direct from the governments of oil-producing countries.
Earlier in his visit, Mr. Singh expressed support for the Arab people in their fight against Zionism. Mr. Singh said both Iraq and India followed a common policy of struggle against imperialism, aimed at achieving social and economic progress for their peoples.
