Background: When the King goes fishing in Malaya, it's a special type of fishing, forbidden by law to all but the Malayan royalty. It's known as Tuba fishing, a process by which fish are poisoned to make them easier to catch. Recently the Paramount Ruler of Malaya visited Pahang State and a fish drive was ordered. A fish drive means plenty of the special poison used, and so scores of malays settled down to pound the tuba root from which the poison is extracted.

One and a half tens of Tuba root were used in this drive, the pounding beginning at dusk and going on until midnight.

After the pounding the poison is extracted with water, and the milky juice drains into the bottom of the barge.

On the big day hundreds of canoes arrive on the scene; each one take a ration from the poison barge and moves off to take up position. The Pawang or magician takes command of the days activities; and then the Paramount Ruler for the signal and then, tuba poison is poured into the river.

The first fish must by custom be taken by the magician a boat - until that has happened not even the Paramount Ruler can make a start.

One the magician has his first catch safely on board everyone begins - even the ladies of the Court try their skill - not that much skill is required to catch these stupified victims of the Tuba poisoners of Pahang
